The past few years have been enormously challenging as the world has faced the devastating effects of COVID-19.
One of the results of the pandemic has been an increase in the number of online TOEFL and IELTS tutors. Some are good, some are not.
Please check your potential tutor's credentials very carefully before you make a decision about lessons. Beware of copycats.
The wording I use on this website is my own, original wording. I take care to write clearly for English language learners. If you see my words repeated on other websites, then they have been copied. Please be cautious of these websites.
If you book a series of lessons, then I'll create a personalized lesson plan for you based on your specific needs assessment.
These are sample lesson plans. Your lesson plan is personalized and created especially for you.
We use this lesson plan to guide us as we go through your lessons. As I get to know you, and see how you learn and respond to feedback, I amend your lesson plan so it's always updated with your exact requirements and specific needs.
That way, you always have a record of what you've done, and what you need to do as you work towards your goal.
I use my language teaching knowledge so that your lesson plan highlights the overlaps between language skills and follows a logical progression.
For TOEFL or IELTS lessons to be effective, you should be able to commit to 2 lessons per week for 4-5 weeks.
A total of 8-10 lessons might seem like a lot, but it's only with constant feedback and reinforcement that you'll make the best progress. That's why I offer a discount for lesson packages.
If you just want to focus on one skill, or you need urgent help before your exam, then consider booking a single lesson.
Please remember that improving language proficiency isn't the same as learning facts. Building language skills takes time and practice. Big changes in language learning occur after 5-6 weeks of constant studying. That's when your new language skills become natural and spontaneous.
You should also build in extra time for review, homework and self-study.
If you're worried about paying for a lesson package, then please read this explanation of why lessons are beneficial.
I offer payment options for lesson packages so that you can pay for lessons weekly, or in 2 or 3 instalments. I don't charge extra for this service (unlike big language schools that often add on 'administration' fees.)
The honest answer is "I don't know" because I don't know you.
Everyone learns differently, so it's impossible for me to answer this question before I've seen how you learn.
Every good exams teacher will say the same thing!
A score increase of 2 to 3 points in one section of TOEFL may not seem like a lot, but for many students, this will take several months rather than weeks.
So please be realistic and start preparing for your exam well in advance of your final deadline.
This is a very approximate guide based on my years of experience of working with TOEFL students.
You may need longer to prepare, or you may be ready sooner.
many fossilized errors
gaps in your language proficiency
anxiety about your deadline
memory or recall problems
very little time to study and practice outside lessons....
...then it may take longer than average for you to reach your target scores.
Language learning is complicated. Our brains need to do a lot of multi-tasking while we perform different skills like listening and speaking, and at the same time we need to remember vocabulary and grammar rules.
And for English proficiency exams, there is the added pressure of time limits and being in front of an examiner as well. That's a lot to cope with under normal circumstances!
But other factors can mean that your progress may be slower than expected.
If you have...
I can advise you about these factors when we chat, and I can share targeted exercises and study strategies to help you.
But it's important to be really honest with yourself and identify whether any of these factors apply to you.
In this video, I explain what we do in lessons and how my personalized support means you'll be ready to conquer TOEFL sooner.
Over the past couple of years, I've noticed a big difference in the way that students prepare for TOEFL and IELTS.
As a result of the pandemic, and the increase in resources available online, more students are choosing to study by themselves. I actually think this is great. Many students do not need to be in lessons for a long time. The end goal is to get through your exam as quickly as possible and not to spend years studying for it.
However, there are definitely ways that specialized TOEFL and IELTS teachers can help accelerate your progress.
Many students I work with know what to do, but they need good quality feedback to reinforce that knowledge.
Some students have fossilized errors which they need help to remove.
Other students have received incorrect or confusing advice.
Some students don't practice in the correct way. They might put a lot of effort into studying but their studying is not effective.
These are the main ways that I help students in lessons:
In lessons, I'll give you LOTS of detailed feedback for everything you do.
Here are some examples of how I correct speaking and writing responses.
In lessons, we'll target those ingrained errors with specific exercises, and we'll work together to remove them.
Think of your fossilized errors like a habit that you need to replace. It's always easier to break a bad habit when you have constant support.
I've taken the TOEFL exam and I scored 120/120 so I know exactly what's required to succeed.
I keep up to date with any changes that ETS announce and I regularly practice exam questions and test myself.
I have a list of ridiculous myths I've heard about the exam from various sources and, in this post, I explain why they're not true.
Imagine studying for less time. It's possible!
I know the best study techniques to guide you to TOEFL success. TOEFL is an English proficiency exam and if you have strong language skills, you will be successful.
That's why I focus on building strong skills, and not on tricks and templates.
